About
About the brand
Founded in Finland in 1976, Alamarin-Jet now focuses on marine waterjets and control systems. According to the manufacturer, more than 90% of its products are made in Finland, with the remainder made in the EU. Maximum input power ratings run from 100 kW for the AJ 160 to 1,500 kW for the Omega 42, with applications from yacht tenders and SOLAS fast rescue craft to patrol boats, fireboats, pilot boats and passenger vessels. The patented Combi-Frame of the AJ 245/AJ 285 and the patented Dual Angle Shaft of the Omega series offer different installation options, while the Sigma drive-by-wire system offers optional joystick docking, position-hold and virtual-anchor functions, subject to configuration. In 2024, the company also announced joint development of its Delta DP dynamic positioning system with the Finnish Border Guard.
Unmanned Surface Vehicles
Propulsion for Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs)
With no exposed propeller, waterjets suit shallow-water operation and respond quickly, and they can be integrated with electronic control systems. In February 2025 the manufacturer reported supplying propulsion and control systems for more than 100 USVs worldwide over the previous year.
USV-ready interface
The EXIF interface of the Sigma Control System provides a CAN bus jet-control interface, including engine management, for commands from third-party autonomy systems.
Control integration on small USVs
AJ 160 and AJ 180/185 come standard with the ACU controller, which accepts an external analogue signal (typically 0–5 V) or NMEA 2000 CAN rudder messages; each ACU controls one actuator.
Redundancy
In the Sigma Control System, each jet is an individual bus node, and twin installations use two electrically separated primary bus lines.
External autopilot support
Sigma provides an interface for third-party autopilots; the optional Intelligent Dynamics package offers heading hold, course and track modes (track mode requires an external navigation planner).

Control Systems
Control systems
Three solutions, selected according to propulsion configuration and handling requirements.
Sigma Control System
Sigma Control systems
Alamarin-Jet's main control system, introduced in 2019. It is drive-by-wire: helm commands travel as electronic signals, and the steering nozzles and reversing buckets are moved hydraulically. Its modular architecture controls one to four waterjets and supports multiple control stations.
Compatible models:Omega 42Omega 37Omega 33AJ 340AJ 285AJ 245

Drive-by-wire, plug and play
Factory-made modular cabling is plug and play; each waterjet is an independent node on the CAN bus, and engine throttle is controlled directly via digital CAN.
Touchscreen + physical keys
Updated in 2024 with a 7-inch touchscreen and 10 physical keys beside it, so the system can still be operated in rough seas when touch input is difficult.
Redundancy
Twin and multi-jet configurations have two galvanically isolated main buses, and each axis of the control levers and joystick has isolated dual outputs.
Joystick, position hold, virtual anchor
Joystick control for berthing and low-speed manoeuvring in port; position hold using GNSS position and heading (single-jet installations need a bow thruster); virtual anchor keeps the vessel within a set radius with the bow into the wind.
Autopilot
Heading hold, Course Mode (holding the course line), and Track Mode following a route from an external planning system such as ECDIS; external autopilots can also be connected.
EXIF external interface (USV Ready)
A complete CAN bus waterjet control interface, including engine management, through which third-party autonomous systems can issue control commands. USV propulsion solutions →
Joystick, position hold, virtual anchor and autopilot are AJ Intelligent Dynamics add-on functions, available depending on vessel configuration; position hold in rough weather requires higher shaft speed and uses more fuel. Availability and integration of the EXIF and external autopilot interfaces depend on the selected modules and the project configuration.
Delta DP
Delta DP dynamic positioning system
A modular, high-level propulsion control system introduced in 2024 that integrates the vessel's propulsion, steering and navigation systems. It can control propulsion units, bow thrusters and rudders, suits workboats and yachts under 24 m, and can be fitted to newbuilds or retrofitted to existing vessels.
Three control modes: Manual controlDynamic positioning (DP)Autopilot
Dynamic positioning and virtual anchor
Using data from GPS, compass and wind sensor, it automatically controls the propulsion units and bow thrusters to hold the vessel on station; the virtual anchor maintains position without dropping anchor.
3-axis joystick force control
A single joystick controls thrust fore-aft, sideways and in rotation, making berthing and low-speed manoeuvring easier.
Autopilot
Heading keeping, course-over-ground (COG) keeping and track following, plus an external waypoint autopilot interface for NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 autopilot computers.
Modular CAN architecture
Modules are linked by the manufacturer's proprietary, J1939-inspired CAN network; each thruster has its own real-time control module, with a 7-inch display and an NMEA 2000 interface for GPS and external autopilot.
Control options
The helm can be fitted with twin throttle levers, a 3-axis joystick or E-Helm, with a mode selector to switch between manual, DP and autopilot.
Engine, gearbox and rudder integration
Engines can be controlled by opto-isolated analogue signal or J1939 CAN, gearboxes by solenoid control, with a ZF ClearCommand DP-interface option; rudders support on/off (bang-bang) or PWM proportional-valve control, and bow thrusters analogue signal or PWM proportional valves.
Sigma controls waterjets; Delta DP can additionally integrate rudders and bow thrusters — choose according to the propulsion configuration. Equipment and functions that can be integrated are confirmed per vessel configuration and project.
Actuator Control Unit
ACU actuator control unit
A modular propulsion control system built from a simple selection of modular components. Each ACU controls one actuator — reverse-deflector operation, nozzle steering, engine throttle or gearbox engagement. Standard on the AJ 160 and AJ 180/185.
- Three inputs: internal potentiometer, external analogue signal (typically 0–5 V) or NMEA 2000 CAN rudder message
- 12/24 V supply with reverse-polarity protection; IP67, operating temperature −40 to 65 °C
- Configured with the built-in button and traffic-light LEDs, or an optional service tool; 155 × 150 × 35 mm
- Typical set-ups: ACU-MD for deflector control and ACU-ES for steering, with mechanical cable, electronic lever or electronic wheel input
